EXT. COASTAL HIGHWAY – DAY
The afternoon sun hangs high, casting golden streaks over the endless stretch of ocean to our left. Waves crash against the rugged cliffs, their white froth dissolving into the deep blue. The towering redwoods stand tall on the right, ancient and wise, their shadows flickering across the pavement as we speed along the winding road.
Inside the Lexus, the windows are down, letting in the crisp, salty breeze. It tangles in my hair, brushes against my skin, electric, alive.
“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” blasts from the speakers, its synths and melodies vibrating through my bones. I drum my fingers against the wheel, my heart thrumming in sync with the music.
I steal a glance at you, my passenger prince. Sunlight catches in your golden hair, your eyes half-closed, lost in the rhythm of the moment. A grin tugs at your lips, effortless, like you belong here, in this perfect snapshot of time.
My foot presses a little harder on the gas. The road ahead curves like a ribbon, disappearing into the horizon. I feel in love. I feel invincible.
And for once, everything is exactly as it should be.
FADE TO BLACK.
POST-CREDIT SCENE:
Smash cut to a silent parking lot, months later. The car is parked, the air still, the stereo off. The passenger seat is empty.
Tears for Fears had it right all along. Nothing ever lasts forever.
